Clash of Clans Attack Basics: Funnelling, Scouting and Spell Timing
The three skills that turn one-star attacks into three stars in Clash of Clans – how to scout a base, build a funnel and time your spells.
Clash of ClansAttack Basics Most failed attacks in Clash of Clans don’t fail because of the army – they fail in the first 30 seconds. These three fundamentals fix the majority of them.
1. Scout before you attack
In war, you can study a base for as long as you like. Before every attack, look for:
- Clan Castle troops. Can you lure them out with a single troop? Plan where to kill them.
- Splash defences. Know where Wizard Towers, Bomb Towers and Inferno Towers are.
- Traps. Open spaces inside a base often hide Giant Bombs, Spring Traps or air mines.
- The core. Which side gives the shortest path to the Town Hall and the most dangerous defences?
2. Build a funnel
Troops target the nearest building (or the nearest building of their preferred type). If you drop your main army without clearing the edges, they walk around the base instead of into it.
A funnel is simple:
- Clear the outside buildings on both sides of your planned entry point with a few troops.
- Wait until those side buildings are destroyed.
- Deploy your main army in the middle of the cleared area – it now walks straight into the core.
This alone often turns a two-star attack into a three-star attack.
3. Time your spells
| Spell | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Rage | When your main troops reach a dense cluster of defences |
| Heal | Over troops being hit by splash damage, slightly ahead of them |
| Freeze | On Inferno Towers, Eagle Artillery or Scattershots while your troops pass |
| Jump | To skip wall compartments and keep troops moving toward the core |
Spells used too early are wasted; spells used too late can’t save anything. Watch your troops, not the timer.
Practice tips
- Use friendly challenges with clanmates to practise on real war bases.
- Watch replays of your own attacks and spot where troops started to wander.
- Stick with one army composition until you know it well, then branch out.
Good attacks look slow at the start and explosive at the end. Take your time with the funnel, and the rest gets easier.
