Brawl Stars Gem Grab Guide: Controlling the Mine and Protecting the Carrier
Gem Grab is won in the middle of the map. Learn the roles every team needs, how to protect your gem carrier and when to push or play safe during the countdown.
Brawl StarsGem Grab Guide Gem Grab is one of Brawl Stars’ most popular 3v3 modes – and one of the most tactical. Gems spawn from a mine in the middle of the map, and the first team to hold 10 gems through a short countdown wins. Most games are decided by who controls the middle.
The three roles
A good Gem Grab team usually splits into three jobs:
| Role | Job | Typical brawler types |
|---|---|---|
| Gem carrier | Collects gems and stays alive | Durable or self-healing brawlers |
| Mid controller | Holds the area around the mine | Controllers, area damage |
| Lane / support | Covers a side lane or heals the team | Supports, long-range damage |
You don’t need a perfect composition, but every team needs someone whose job is simply not dying with the gems.
Controlling the mine
- Arrive at the middle together. Trickling in one by one gives the enemy easy picks.
- Use bushes and walls to hold the area without standing in the open.
- Area-denial attacks and Supers are excellent for keeping enemies away from the mine.
- Don’t overchase. A kill that pulls you far from the mine can cost you control of it.
Protecting the gem carrier
When a brawler dies, every gem they carried drops on the ground. That’s why the carrier should:
- Stay behind teammates once they hold several gems.
- Retreat early when health drops – healing is safer than gambling.
- Avoid bushes they haven’t checked.
- Let teammates take the risky fights.
The countdown
Once a team holds 10 or more gems, a countdown starts. What to do depends on which side of it you’re on:
If you’re winning
- Play safe and back off. You don’t need kills – you need to survive.
- Keep the carrier far from the enemy and block approaches with your teammates.
If you’re losing
- Go all in on the carrier. Killing them drops the gems and stops the countdown.
- Coordinate Supers so the carrier can’t escape.
Common mistakes
- Everyone collecting gems instead of one main carrier.
- Pushing deep while holding gems.
- Leaving the mine empty while the whole team chases kills.
Gem Grab rewards patience and teamwork more than raw aim. Hold the middle, keep your carrier alive, and the countdown takes care of the rest. For brawler picks by mode, see our mode tier list.
