Heroes are the strongest units you’ll bring into an attack, and hero equipment lets you customise how each one fights. Understanding both makes your attacks far more reliable.

The heroes

The classic heroes are the Barbarian King, Archer Queen, Grand Warden and Royal Champion, and newer heroes have been added over time. Each unlocks at a different Town Hall level and has its own role:

HeroTypical role
Barbarian KingTanky melee hero that clears the outside or pushes into the core
Archer QueenRanged damage – often the most important hero in an attack
Grand WardenSupport that protects and boosts nearby troops
Royal ChampionTargets defences and deals heavy damage

Heroes use abilities once per attack – timing them is a big part of good attacking.

Hero equipment

At the Blacksmith, you unlock equipment for your heroes. Each hero can equip two pieces at a time, and each piece adds stats and often a new effect to the hero’s ability.

  • Common equipment – easier to unlock and cheaper to upgrade.
  • Epic equipment – more powerful effects, often from events, and more expensive to upgrade.

You can switch equipment between attacks, so you can adapt each hero to your army.

Ore

Equipment is upgraded with ore:

OreUsed for
Shiny OreAll equipment upgrades
Glowy OreHigher upgrade levels
Starry OreEpic equipment upgrades

Ore comes from sources such as Clan War attacks, Clan War Leagues, star bonuses, events and the Trader. Starry Ore is the rarest – spend it carefully.

Which equipment to upgrade first

  1. Pieces you use in every attack on your main heroes.
  2. Equipment that fits your main army – some pieces suit air attacks, others ground attacks.
  3. Epic pieces you’ll keep for a long time, using Starry Ore.

Avoid spreading ore across many pieces you rarely equip.

Using heroes well

  • Don’t drop all heroes at the start – deploy them where they’ll have the biggest impact.
  • Use abilities when heroes are low on health or about to be overwhelmed.
  • Keep the Grand Warden with your main army.

Hero upgrades

Hero levels are a major part of your attack strength, so keep at least one hero upgrading whenever possible – see our upgrade order guide. Magic items can speed this up dramatically; see our magic items guide.

Strong heroes with the right equipment turn average armies into three-star attacks. Combine them with the techniques in our attack basics and you’ll see the difference immediately.
